South Africa: Mwafulirwa Ties the Knot

16 December 2008

Malawian striker Russell Mwafulirwa had reason to smile on Sunday despite his Swedish team, IFK Norrkoping, being relegated from the Allsvenskan league last month.

The former Jomo Cosmos and Ajax Cape Town forward walked down the aisle to marry his fiancée Senzi Phakathi at a function held in Elangeni, Durban.

Mwafulirwa was naturally elated with his new status in life and told KickOff.com: "It feels good to be officially recognised as a married man. My wife has relatives and lots of friends here in Durban which is why the wedding took place here."

Although the lanky striker saw his Swedish team relegated before returning to South Africa, he states that he saw many positives during the three months that he spent in the Scandinavian country.

"I joined in July and played through to November featuring as a regular which I was happy with seeing it was my debut season in Europe.

"I scored three goals and created many. I was also named Man of the Match in a couple of games. I really enjoyed the experience and will be fine to stay on with the team though my wish, just like every player, is to be in the top league.

"At the moment my manager is working out things regarding my future, but I am happy at the club.

"My contract is open and so it allows for me to move on if a better offer comes about. But what matters is that the club was happy with the contribution that I made and I am going back there in January," says the 25-year-old, who also had the joy the day before his wedding, of watching his former team, Ajax, win the Telkom KnockOut Cup.
