Lagos — Senior Tour professional Peter Akakasiaka said he hopes to be in his element at the Mary Slessor Charity Golf tournament that tees off at the Calabar Golf Club from Wednesday (tomorrow), and runs through to Saturday.
The legendary Akakasiaka and two other senior tour players, Bello Seibidor and Friday Obe are the only members of the tour that will play along 17 regular tour players for a share of N2.5million at the event on Thursday and Friday.
Akakasiaka who remains the only Nigerian professional to have played in the main round of the Open Championship says he is looking forward to playing the Calabar course, which he last played in 1996.
"Anybody is capable of winning the tournament because it will be played on brown. I prefer playing on greens," he said.
Akakasiaka has firmly gained foothold as the leading light on the senior tour where he has strung together four wins in eight events.
He won the President Open in Asaba as well as the Osun State Open and MicCom Classic, played at Ada.
He also ensured that he was not out of touch with the leaderboard, in events he did not win, with a fair mix of second and third placing in them.
Some of the events where he finished in third positions are the Enugu State Governor's Cup, the Captain's Cup and the Local Government Cup, both at St David Mark's Club in Oturkpo.
The Slessor Charity tournament is organised by Partnership Opportunities for Women Empowerment Realisation (POWER); a not-for-profit organisation that is the initiative of the First Lady of Cross River State, Mrs Obioma Imoke.
The organisation is a tool for empowering women by creating partnership opportunities for entrepreneurs via introducing them to skills which would enable them grow their livelihood means.
