Sierra Leone: Green Scenery salutes United Nations

Green scenery, a local non governmental organization Friday welcomed the decision by the United Nations general assembly which adopted the optional protocol to the international convention on economic, social and cultural rights, ICESCR 42 after the civil and political rights was adopted.

The release stated that the optional protocol establishes a complaints procedure for violations of economic, social and cultural rights, adding that Green Scenery viewed the adoption as never-too-late but a representation of advancement for human rights on the 60th anniversary of the universal declaration for human rights.

"We now see equal status between those who suffer from civil and political rights violations and economic, social and cultural rights. Green Scenery wishes to recognize the efforts of all governments, human rights experts, activists, and civil society for the several decades of work on this very import protocol," the release stated.

The optional protocol communications states that states parties to the covenant joining the protocol recognize the competence of the UN committee on economic, social and cultural rights to receive and consider communications alleging violations of the economic, social and cultural rights set forth in the covenant.

"As an interim measure, the committee may transmit to the state party concerned for its urgent consideration a request that the state party take such interim measures to avoid possible irreparable damage to the victims of the alleged violations," the statement stated.
