Gambia: Samger Keep Pressure On Wallidan

Lamin A. Darboe

12 July 2008

With only four matches to the end of the league Wallidan are hanging on to the top of the league table by single goal margin.

Second placed Samger defeated Seaview 2-0 on Friday to overtake Wallidan by one point whose match against Real de Banjul was shifted to Monday due to the Gambia versus Algeria game. But the Blue Boys managed only a goalless draw against the defending champions failing to maintain their two point lead. The draw put them level on points with Samger but they lead with a one goal advantage.

Hawks are also lurking behind with 29 points in third after a goalless draw with GPA on Friday. They are eying their first league title for over two decades now.

Wallidan have dropped six vital points since week sixteen, playing three draws scoring only once against Gamtel. And in their latest draw against champions Real de Banjul, the Blue Boys failed to score for the second time in a row.

Real could have taken the lead in the 36th minute but Mbemba Colley missed the ball and scored himself into the net instead. Muhammed Sugufara tested Real's resolve in goal with a powerful shot and Alkali Fadera lived up to the task punching the ball away.

George Cole attempted from the spot but shoot narrowly over the bar. And Wallidan had an appeal for penalty in the 71st minute ignored by referee Modou Sowe when the ball hit the hand of a Real defender. And Wallidan missed their best chance when Sainey Touray beat the offside trap to run face to face with Alkali Fadera who put off his shot.
