Nigeria: Governor Goje Pledges Polio-Free Society As IBB Hails Prof Idris

Abuja — Gombe State governor, Alhaji Muhammed Danjuma Goje, has promised to fight against the polio disease to enable the state and Nigeria at large to have polio free society.

Speaking at the launching of a book entitled 'Academics, Epidemics and Politics' written by Professor Idris Mohammed, held at Shehu Musa Yar'Adua Centre, Abuja yesterday, the governor stated that though Gombe State had low cases of polio, the state will not relent by commiting more efforts to eradicate the disease with the support of everybody.

Also speaking at the occasion, the former military president of Nigeria, Ibrahim Badmasi Babangida, commended the writer of the book and urged him to put more efforts in his write up and advised others to emulate Professor Muhammed.

However, Governor Goje revealed that Professor Muhammed was the only Northerner since 1979 that has won the National Merit Award in Science and Medicine, saying that he is an intellectual professor who deserved the award.

He added that Gombe State shares with Professor Mohammed's desire for excellence. "This is what informed our commitment to the development of education and compelled us to establish the Gombe State University which is graduating its first set of students next year," the governor said.

"We have since 2003 been implementing various programmes that would be sustained and expand access to quality education, irrespective of class and location in order to enable us produce more Professor Idris Muhammed in the future," he pointed out.

Others who spoke at the ocassion, Justice Mu'azu Abdulkadir, appealed to the the people to make available copies of the book because of its importance and commended the writer for trying to educate Nigerians in all aspects of human life.

Responding, the author of the book, Professor Idris Mohammed, thanked the entire public for the honour bestowed on him and promised to do more.
