18 December 2008

Lagos State government yesterday distributed 250 wheelchairs, 250 clutches, 500 special chairs and four motorized wheel chairs to over 1000 physically challenged people.

Governor Babatunde Fashola urged the beneficiaries to justify the sacrifice the state government was making and resist the temptation of returning to the streets for alms. He said the government would not fail to apply appropriate laws on such offenders.

Represented by the Commissioner for Rural Development, Prince Lanre Balogun, Governor Fashola called on stakeholders and corporate organizations in the state as well as wealthy individuals and philanthropic organizations to partner with the government to create an enabling environment for peace and harmony.

He said the government was optimistic that the call would not go unheeded, noting that if the stakeholders collaborate effectively with the government, it would go a long way in attaining the desired goal to restore self -esteem, dignity and creativity to the less privileged in the society.

Scheduled to begin next week, the government said five critically distressed joints which need urgent fixing had been found on the bridge.

Three of the distressed joints are Lagos inward while the other two are Ogudu-Ibadan inward.

Addressing the press yesterday, the spokesman for Fashola, Barrister Opeyemi Bamidele said the government would, through the contractor, Moreno Marinas Plc, dismantle the existing joints, place new ones and repair the bridge. Bamidele also noted that the repair works would be carried out only at night between 11 pm and 5:00 am from Monday to Saturday and full day on Sundays.
