Kampala — THE Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), the Rotary Club of Mengo, the Rotary Club of Kampala South and the Wheelchair Foundation have donated 101 wheelchairs to disabled people.

The wheelchairs were recently handed over to the beneficiaries at the URA headquarters in Nakawa.

Commissioner general Allen Kagina said URA feels happier when the people from whom they collect taxes are well catered for, especially in areas that hurt most.

She also applauded the Rotary Club for assisting the needy.

Higiro Sekibibi, the president of the Rotary Club of Mengo, said although Rotarians have been distributing wheelchairs to the disabled, the demand has remained enormous.

"The national demand for wheelchairs is 1.5 million. Because of the meagre resources, rotarians make interventions where possible," he said.

He also said the Rotary Club had helped in the eradication of polio. Peters Musoke, the coordinator of the Wheelchair Foundation, said: "We sympathise with the less privileged people in the society. This is why we have intervened."
