Nigeria: Kaduna to Take Over NNN as Major Investor

The Northern Governors' forum already agreed that Kaduna State government should be the major investor in the New Nigerian Newspapers (NNN) by having 51percent of the company shares and the other 49 percent to be shared among the remaining states.

Northern Governors' Forum Chairman and governor of Niger State Mu'azu Babangida Aliyu, who made the announcement while fielding questions from journalists in Ilorin, said the newspaper company would surely be recapitalized.

He said the northern states are fully determined to ensure New Nigerian Newspapers (NNN) is put on a sound footing to be able to cover the areas and the country properly.

The governor also said the northern states have already taken a step by forming a committee to fashion out modalities upon which it will be managed.

"The Northern Governors' Forum has already agreed that Kaduna state government should be the major investor in the company by having 51percent and others will share the remaining 49 percent", he said.

The governor said the conclusion was based on the fact that the paper is situated in Kaduna and when it is opened it has more coverage of the state than any other state.

He said making Kaduna State a major investor would be able to assist them in ensuring that the paper is returned to its past glory.

"We are still expecting the report of the committee that open the bidding for the company and by the time we get that we should be able to deliberate on it when next we meet either in January or February next year", he said.

He assured that the company will not be allowed to rot away, but it will be restructured in such a way that it will still remain a shining star among the Nigerian national dailies.

On the role of the traditional rulers in the country, the governor also said the traditional institutions need to be respected and given the required role given to them by their status.

He said the traditional institutions have been very helpful to the country and even in the world over as the people in the communities are closer to them.
