The Ministry of Industry is projecting for 2012 the re-launch of sugar production in the country, in order to satisfy the demand for this product, announced last Friday in the central Huambo Province, the incumbent deputy minister, Kiala Ngone Gabriel.
Speaking at the end of a two-day visit to this province, the Industry deputy minister said that at this moment studies are being carried out to determine the province in which the future sugar factory will be built.
The last sugar factory that the country had has been stopped for about eighteen years.
Kiala Ngone Gabriel also revealed that feasibility studies are being carried out with potential investors in the provinces of Benguela, Cunene, Malanje, Kwanza Sul and Zaire.
According to him, the necessity of sugar in the country is estimated at 350, 000 tons per year.
Therefore, the future sugar plant will have a minimum capacity to produce an average 220, 000 tons per year.
The only sugar factories that the countries had stopped to function in 1989, the factory of Catumbela, and in 1991, the factory of Dombe Grande, both in the central Benguela Province.
