Call it the Mad Max phenomenon or the Fast & Furious generation. High power, low slung, big and stylish bikes today are all the rage in Nigeria, a market that's being driven by a rapidly growing segment of people who are looking beyond commuting to a more involving motorcycling experience. Forget economical bikes. Forget fuel efficiency. It's bigger and better that these consumers want, and there's now a fast widening range of power bikes on offer in Abuja.
The motorcycle industry is finally seeing what other industries have seen, to the process of upgradation that segments such as cars and consumer electronics have witnessed in the past few years. Consumers are asking for bigger, better, more stylish bikes. Many first-time two-wheeler buyers are coming straight into the power bike segment and many are migrating from scooters to this segment of motorcycle. "Most bikese come with greater comfort features and big fuel tanks that allow long distance cruising without refuelling. And most carry high-end features like electric starters, powerful new-age headlamps, side stand indicators and digital gear indicators. There's an emerging class of people to whom the motorcycle is more than just a commuter vehicle," says an engineering official. "A good performance machine, one with a great image, one that reflects the user's personality, that's the kind of bike people are looking for in this segment."
