Lady Jay Dee (Judith Daines Wambura) is on BBC (Africa on your Street) a channel which recognizes African musicians in UK. She is one of the most serious bongo flava (Tanzanian blend of R&B, Afro pop and Souk) stars to be reckoned with in East Africa today, having earned her staying power with top charting albums like Machozi (2001) and Binti (2003).
She started out singing in a church choir and then worked as a radio presenter at Tanzania's Clouds FM . Now she makes her own hits and leaves fans spinning. While talking to BBC's Irene Madonko, Jay Dee said, she has already bagged so many awards, including M-Net's Best Female Artist in Tanzania, the Tanzania Music Awards' Best R&B Album and Channel O's Best Video in East Africa and now she is looking forward to getting a Kora award for the Best Female in East Africa category. "Everything has a time.
About five years back, local hip-hop was popular. And these artists were predominantly male. There were a few women into hip-hop, but they were not popular. When I started singing R&B, I opened the way for more women. Also new technology has made it easier to record," She said.
