Harare — HARARE Province recorded 20 971 cases of crime between January and November this year, reflecting a 5 percent decrease over the same period last year.
Speaking at the Cop and Station of the Year awards for 2008 last week, the Officer Commanding Harare Province, Senior Assistant Commissioner Charles Makono, paid tribute to the efforts of the community in reducing crime.
"In 2007 during the period of January to November, the district received 22 125 cases and in 2008 during the same period it received 20 971 cases, which translates to a decrease of 1 154," he said.
Harare central district was the mirror of the province and the country and that any foreigner would judge the level of peace based on what he or she saw prevailing in the city centre.
Snr Asst Comm Makono said policing was a shared responsibility between the police and the community the world over.
The roles played by the community, he said, varied from place to place.
"They range from community efforts where members of the public get directly involved in crime prevention activities.
"The sterling efforts by the Neighbourhood Watch Committees and Crime Consultative Committees and the invaluable donations of material and financial support by the business community should be applauded," said Snr Asst Comm Makono.
Several officers, including Assistant Commissioner Bobby Murwira, Asst Comm Charamba and Chief Superintendent Simon Mwatsikesimbe received awards at the ceremony.
Snr Asst Comm Makono urged the police to execute their duties in a diligent and professional manner so that they could win the confidence, hearts, minds and trust of the public.
"We need officers who are committed to their duties; honest officers who are guided by principles of honesty and integrity in the performance of their duties," he said.
He urged the public to join hands with the police in the fight against crime by providing resources, which could be used to promote effectiveness in the war against crime.
Snr Asst Comm Makono congratulated recipients of the awards and encouraged them to tackle the challenges associated with policing without fear or favour.
The awards were sponsored by the District Crime Consultative Committee in conjunction with the Pakistani community in Zimbabwe. The Pakistani community has a long history of supporting the police.
In recent years, they have donated a lighting system for Harare Central charge office, cells, padlocks to the cells, chairs for the Milton Park Police Station and three computers and a printer to Harare Central district head office.
