Tunisia: Tunisia is the recipient of the United Nations South-South Cooperation Prize

Tunis — Tunisia has received yet another distinction from a major international body.The United Nations has awarded Tunisia with the South -South cooperation Prize. During a ceremony held at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York, on the occasion of the UN Day of South -South cooperation, Mrs Neziha Gueddana, the managing director of the Tunisian National Board for Family and Population (ONFP) was awarded the prize in recognition of its success in setting up the "Kollo project", a trilateral cooperation program between Tunisia, Niger and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) for maternal health, which Tunisia helped set up in the town of Kollo in Niger.

In her presentation, Mrs Gueddana, stressed Tunisia's policy in terms of human and social development, highlighting the implementation of the strategies set up by President Ben Ali whose results have enabled the country to reach a remarkable level of human development, social cohesion, and political stability.

In a strong message of consideration, Niger's delegation hailed Tunisia's contribution to Niger's development, highlighting the exemplary bilateral relations between both countries, as well as the promising cooperation perspectives between them.

In 2007, UNFPA, established a thematic Fund for maternal health that aims at helping developing countries, increase access to and quality of maternal health care, and to empower women to exercise their right to maternal health.

The Fund will focus on supporting 75 countries with the greatest need. The goal is to raise 465 million dollars during 2008-2011, and encourage developed countries and private sponsors to contribute more to saving women's lives.
