The Rumpi Area Participatory Development Project has trained some 30 technicians and town planners in the Southwest Region on the supervision of rural infrastructures. This took place at the Community Development Training and Specialisation School, Kumba, from December 11 to 12.

Rumpi Project Coordinator, Besong Ntui Ogork, stated that the objective of the training is part of their sustainability strategy for infrastructures constructed. He said the trainees would act as delegate supervisors on behalf of the beneficiary communities, to ensure the construction work is properly done.

"We just want the communities to have an eye on their projects through the trainees. They would report cases of malpractices to the appropriate engineer for immediate action," Ogork stated.

He said the beneficiary communities are expected to participate in the project execution and implementation phase, to ensure their sustainability. The Coordinator added that they have hired an independent consulting firm to supervise contractors running their projects.

Expatiating on their projects, Charles Nyongo, Rumpi Project Engineer, stated that Rumpi is constructing 20 rural markets, 22 village banks, 34 water schemes, two health centres and two community education action centres in villages within the Southwest Region. He said some of the projects are on-going, while others would soon kick off; all aimed at developing the rural communities and alleviating poverty.

During the workshop, the participants were trained on project management, quality of materials, quality control, construction techniques, work specifications and types of structures to be constructed.

At the end of the workshop, Lanson Obasiyo Nasumba, a builder from Bafaka Balue, Ndian Division, said he will use his new skills to properly supervise the village bank to be constructed in his village.

Henri Nzegge Abi of Ekanbeng-Bangem Council said since the rural market to be constructed in his area would change the lives of the people, he promised to supervise objectively to ensure that the work is effectively done.
