Kampala — VICTORIA Seeds has introduced a new variety of maize seeds in northern Uganda.
The Yara 41 and 42 variety gives higher yields and matures faster than ordinary maize.
Managing director Josephine Okot unveiled the seeds in Oyam district last Friday during the open farmers field day.
She said the firm would promote extensive commercial agriculture through cereal crop production in the north.
"Gulu, Amuru and Kitgum have 20% of Uganda's arable land. Private sector investment has a critical role in post-conflict economic recovery," Okot said.
"We have invested in a seed processing plant and research facility at Palenga in Gulu," she disclosed. She said the company was marketing over 70 seed varieties of maize, sorghum, rice and millet.
Okot said her company recognised that commercial agriculture offered the opportunity for economic recovery and human development for the northern region.
She noted that crop production in Uganda was inefficient due to limited certified seeds, crop protection products and fertilisers which are not affordable.
"Victoria Seeds is demonstrating its commitment to addressing these challenges by launching Yara 41 and Yara 42 maize hybrid," Okot said.
Dr. Grace Abalo, a researcher, said there was need for maximum utilisation of land for commercial crop production.
