Former Minister, Hon. Bochong Francis Nkwain, has lauded the SDF MP for the Boyo Constituency, Hon. James Ntam Mubain, for bringing succor to rural women in the area. The politician expressed his word of appreciation in Fundong, recently, as the MP donated tools to some 20 farming women's groups in his constituency.
Nkwain said by giving wheelbarrows, hoes, cutlasses and some storage containers to the rural women, Hon. Ntam was, indeed, helping them to feed Cameroon.Hon. Nkwain, who is a Central Committee Member of the ruling CPDM party, said it was unusual that the SDF MP invited him to attend the occasion. By inviting him, Nkwain remarked, the SDF MP was hearkening to President Biya's policy of peace and political tolerance.
He urged Boyo people to close ranks and work together for development. For his part, Hon. James Ntam said, by donating farm tools to the women groups worth FCFA 1.5 million, he was contributing his own quota to food security in Boyo. "The challenge for Boyo is to provide sufficient food for everyone," he stated.
Ntam regretted that many tons of corn consumed in Boyo is purchased from other areas. He said 90 percent of tomatoes consumed in Fundong are bought from Bamenda. Hon. Ntam was equally disappointed that plantains, pineapples, green leaves the people in his constituency consume come from elsewhere. "We lose lot of money every year buying from other places to the detriment of our local communities," he regretted.
He said local farmers have the energy to work and only need to be encouraged to double their production. The MP said he was coming out of a long period of comatose that was imposed by poor health after his election in July 2007. Despite the illness, the MP said, he continued work for his people.
He announced that he would soon finalise the creation of an NGO known as the Boyo Initiative for Rural Development in order boost local agricultural production. He also said he will soon create a micro-finance outfit with a real rural and poverty alleviation portfolio.
Going by the MP, he has used the FCFA 7.8 million of the FCFA 8 million parliamentary grants he received, on micro projects. He announced that following his intervention, the Minister of Public Works has granted FCFA 300 million for the reconstruction of the Fonfuka Bridge that collapsed recently, cutting off the area from the rest of the Northwest Region.
He equally told his people that the Minister of Culture has granted FCFA 8 million for the completion of the Abassakom Area Development Union, ABADU hall in Fundong. Speaking earlier, the first Deputy Mayor of the Fundong Rural Council, Mrs. Caroline Yibain, said Hon. Ntam's initiative was unprecedented. She expressed hopes that many more farming groups would be given tools before the MP's mandate expires.
The Divisional Officer for Fundong, Charles Aminkeng Fomin, urged the women to use the farm tools judiciously in order to double agricultural production in the area. The Fon of Kom, HRH, Vincent Yuh II and the Divisional Delegate of Agriculture, Mr. George Ngwang Nfor, attended the occasion.
