Eritrea: Building Human Capital is a Prerequisite for Socio-Economic And Political Development, Minister Says

Dekemhare — The Minister of Education, Mr. Semere Russom, said that building all-round human capital is a prerequisite for socio-economic and political development. He made the remarks at a workshop held in Dekemhare town focusing on education for pastoralists.

Noting that the fundamental factor for the development of education constitutes its accessibility to the section of society living in remote areas, Mr. Semere indicated that the major challenges of the country's curriculum rests on providing quality and equitable educational opportunities to those sections who did not secure the opportunity in general and pastoralists and semi-pastoralists ones in particular. In this regard, he stressed the need for undertaking coordinated efforts as part of the development programs so that the education offered to pastoralists and semi-pastoralists bear fruitful outcome. The Minister further expressed conviction that the workshop would map out effective strategy and implementation timetable through identifying the problems encountered in providing education to the aforementioned sections of the society.

The workshop is aimed at creating common understanding as regards education for pastoralists at the national level, ensuring easy access of educational opportunities for pastoralists and semi-pastoralists and laying the steppingstone to this end. Experts from inside the country and abroad presented a number of study papers on education of pastoralists and experience of other countries in the field.

Following discussion, the participants of the workshop adopted recommendations, including the need for implementing an experimental project as regards education for pastoralist and the like.
