Gambia: Unemployment a Major Issue Among the Young - NYSS Boss

Amadou Jallow

Farrafenni — Musa Mbye, the executive director of the National Youth Service Scheme (NYSS), has described unemployment as a major issue that solicits the efforts of every individual to address.

Creating employment for the young people, he said, is a way to cut down the poverty levels of the country. According to him, in order to ensure that the needs of the young people are addressed, concerted efforts must be strengthened. Mr Mbye was speaking last Saturday while presenting a paper on Youth employment, in the National Youth Service Scheme perspective.

A distinct group in society, he noted, the young people have the right to contribute their part in national development. He said that there was a greater need for a faster growth of development in the country.

The NYSS boss further told young people that the NYSS, since its inception, has trained and graduated one thousand, five hundred and sixty five (1565) young people in various skills. "Some of these graduates are now been employed in different institutions while others are self employed. Development is a collective requirement to bring about change. And the issue of youth empowerment is in diverse ways incumbent upon everyone to take part in," he said.

Some of the young people however argued that the number of young people trained under NYSS since its inception was relatively low, but Mr Mbye in his response noted that, it is the government that gave the 100% sponsor for the tuition fee, including monthly stipends.
