Botswana: Enjoy And Take Care

23 December 2008

editorial

The festive season is here again. This is a time for celebrations of all sorts, family re-unions, vacations, and church pilgrimages.

It is during these holidays when even those who never go home get the chance to go home, and as such, roads are often filled with traffic challenging those travelling to exercise extra caution.

This is the time also, regrettably, when higher numbers of fatal accidents are recorded than any other holidays. It is during this festive season when some families lose their loved ones in car accidents some of which could have been avoided.

As many will be preparing to take trips to various destinations, Mmegi urges members of the public to be cautious.

Drivers should make sure their cars are fit for the road before taking long trips checking everything that might jeopardise their safety and that of other road users.

The Department of Road Safety has been aggressive in sensitising the public about the dangers of drunken driving and over speeding. These messages should apply to all of us and we urge Batswana to take them seriously.

We urge drivers to stop using alcohol while driving. Driving while intoxicated exposes one to risk of getting into accidents that could have been easily avoided. It is advisable to give the keys to someone who is sober to drive, if one wants to have their drink.

Every Motswana is important to the development of this country and thus we urge everyone to be careful.

Commuters should also be cautious during this time, make wise decisions regarding your mode of travel; avoid hitchhiking, particularly accepting rides from those who are drinking behind the wheel.

On the HIV/AIDS front we should all know by now that the best way to protect yourself is to abstain or use protection all the time. We should keep this in mind and live it.

We take this opportunity to wish our readers a Merry Christmas and a Happy, and Prosperous New Year. We pledge to come back better prepared to serve you in the new season.
