Asmara — The Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Arefaine Berhe, said that the main policies and strategies of the Ministry focus on irrigation farming and achieving food security and export-oriented products, as well as one that boosts natural resources.
Noting that the majority of the population engages in farming for its daily living, he pointed out that vigorous efforts are being exerted in the agricultural sector to eradicate poverty and achieve food security, and thereby develop the national economy. Mr. Arefaine further outlined that there are over 250 micro-dams across the country that have the capacity of holding a total of 175 million cubic meters of water and could irrigate over 15,000 hectares.
In addition, there exist 3,000 wells and more than 600 water reservoirs which could put over 6,000 hectares under cultivation. The Minister went on to say that a number of water diversion schemes have been constructed that could facilitate irrigation farming on more than 50,000 hectares.
Highlighting the accomplishments so far scored in various agricultural activities, he indicated that there exist about 500,000 hectares of potential farmlands that could be put under cultivation and that up to 480,000 tones of crops are expected to be harvested from this.
As regards the endeavors being made to develop agro-industry, Mr. Arefaine explained that continued training and consultations are being offered to the farming community, in addition to providing market and supply information, as well as extending loans and extension service. He also elaborated on the encouraging achievements being registered in the development of fruits and vegetables farming, as well as boosting animal resources.
Mr. Arefaine pointed out that the action program for 2009 would give top priority to the task of developing strategic cereals, fruits and vegetables, as well as livestock, besides the construction and renovation of micro-dams, water reservoirs and other agricultural infrastructure facilities.
