South Africa: Bright Warns Roberts

24 December 2008

Santos coach David Bright has warned goalkeeper Wayne Roberts to start behaving like a professional otherwise he could see his soccer career sink into oblivion.

Roberts has been on and off the field due to disciplinary problems that resulted in the minder missing most of the Absa Premiership games this season.

The former Under-23 goalkeeper has already been fined by the Peoples Team after going AWOL earlier this season.

Speaking to KickOff.com, Bright said was happy to see Roberts back at training, but said he had warned him to work extra hard in order to force his way back into the starting line-up.

"Management has already taken disciplinary action against him and now he is back at training.

"I don't want to discuss his problems in the media but Wayne must realise that soccer is a short-term career and he must make the make of best of the opportunity still available to secure his future.

"Wayne is a married man and must understand that he has to act like an adult and take responsibility for his family and his future.

"Currently, Francis Chansa and the other goalkeepers are doing well and Roberts will have to fight extra hard to be in contention for a starting berth."

Bright said that the team is in high spirits going into the Christmas break after beating SuperSport United away and that he intended re-enforcing the is team when they return.

"We need two strong, quality defenders and a central midfielder. Hopefully I will be able to sign players for those positions when the transfer window period re-opens in January."
