Nigeria: Omatek, OAU Partner to Equip Staff, Students With PcC

24 December 2008

OMATEK Ventures Plc and the Obafemi Awolowo University have entered into a partnership that will make all the staff of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife proud owners of personal computers (PCs).

The students of one of the foremost institution of learning in Nigeria will also benefit from the partnership, stemming from the N500 million ICT finance agreement between Omatek and Afribank.

This was made known at the just concluded the First ICT/Job Fair organised at the main campus of the university by the institution's management in partnership with Omatek and some other IT and Telecom companies in Nigeria .

Mrs Florence Seriki, GMD/CEO, Omatek represented at the occasion by her Group General Manager, Mr Duke Ekpeyong,

revealed that the OEM is also ready to partner with the OAU in the area of R & D (Research and Development) to further enlarge the coast of Nigeria for into new areas of technology innovations.

While chronicling the history of Omatek in the last 21 years, Mrs Seriki said the company had also opened a factory in Ghana where its products are now being spun out as in Nigeria .

While appreciating the efforts of the participating companies at the exhibition, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Michael Faborode, represented by his Deputy VC (Academics), Prof Funmilayo Togoun-Bickesteth, said that achieving the millennium goal that had been much noised about would be far-fetched without inculcating what it required to be there in Nigerian students.

He said Nigeria could not afford to be complacent and that " we need to know what it requires as far as IT skillsare concerned".

He said the fair which was first of its kind on the campus of any Nigerian university would afford both the staff and students of OAU to be abreast of current trends in the ICT world.

"Let me then charge you you all to make this fair worthwhile by contributing meaningfully during the sessions.

"Avail yourself the opportunity to interact with the companies at the available stands", he said.

He said members of the university communities would have the opportunity to explore the contributions various IT companies participating at the fair had been making to national development.

According to Professor Faborode, the fair would highlight and explore different perspective of ICT at national development.
