Gbenga Abegunrin

25 December 2008

Ibadan — Governors Adebayo Alao-Akala, and Gbenga Daniel of Oyo and Ogun states, have called on the people of the state, especially Christians, to use the Christmas period to reflect on the need to continue to live in peace with their neighbours.

Alao-Akala in his special Christmas message to the people maintained that development could only thrive in a peaceful atmosphere, urging them to use this special season to extend hands of fellowship to one another.

Daniel called on Ogun indigenes to reflect on the teachings of Jesus Christ and continue to pray for the peace and unity of the country.

In a released in Abeokuta signed by Kayode Samuel, Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Daniel advised Christians to imbibe the humility exemplified by Jesus Christ's life, as they enter 2009, which is widely predicted as a year of austerity.

"I implore Christians to imbibe and reflect on the lessons of the birth of Jesus Christ in their interactions with their compatriots. They should also not relent in their prayers for peace and progress of our fatherland as enjoined by the Holy Book. We should never use religion for divisive ends, but as a chord that binds us, promote peaceful coexistence and the good of our land", Daniel said.

The Ogun State Governor also urged Nigerians to use the season to reflect on the state of the nation, renew their faith in the country and work for the consolidation of the gains of democracy.

Alao-Akala Oyo State people to move closer to God, offer prayers for the peace, stability and progress of the state and Nigeria in general.

In a press release by his Chief Press Secretary, A. B. Ojo, Alao-Akala maintained that it is pertinent to recall that Christmas symbolises humility because Jesus Christ, whose birth is being remembered during Yuletide, was born in a manger.
