The Nigerian Shippers' Council has presented a Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) to the Kano State Governor, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau with a view to ensure the successful take-off of the N1.7BN Kano Inland Dry Port at Zawachiki, Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State.
In his address during the presentation of the certificate to the state governor at the Government House for onward presentation to the concessionaire of the project, the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers' Council, Capt. Adamu Abdu Biu (rtd), explained that the project has a 30-month completion ultimatum.
He said that the foundation of the 50,000 TU capacity ICD was started last two years but due to difficulties in processing the required documents among other problems, the project was delayed.
The Executive Secretary expressed optimism that with the level of commitment shown by the state governor and the concessionaire, the project will no doubt be completed on schedule.
Capt. Abdu Biu (rtd),later solicited the state government's assistance in the provision of roads, water, electricity and parameter fence so that the port when completed will conform to International Standards of Ports Security (ISPS).
Responding , the state governor, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau promised the visiting team that his administration will do its best within the limited resources at its disposal to provide the port with necessary infrastructure for its smooth take-off.
He added that because of the commercial history of Kano, the state government was determined to see the full realigning of the project as it will create a new name and a major turning point for the state business antecedents and further re-affirm government's support and that of the business community in Kano. He reassured the provision of the needed infrastructure at the project site to complement his administration's drive towards urban renewal.
Shekarau who expressed hope that the concessionaire, Dala Inland Container Service will complete the project before the scheduled time, said: "the project must be completed while I am in office because you know that my days in office are numbered."
In his speech shortly after receiving the C of O from the governor, the Chairman of the Dala Inland Container Services, Alhaji Ahmad Rabi'u expressed gratitude to Almighty Allah for witnessing the memorable day of receiving the document which will mark the beginning of the project.
