Nigeria: Governor Akala Explains Fee Hike in Polytechnic Ibadan

25 December 2008

Governor Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala of Oyo State says his administration's decision to approve hike in fees for the Polytechnic Ibadan was in line with the new policy of the National Board of Technical Education (NBTE) which drastically reduced the number of students each polytechnic in the country can admit.

The governor said in a statement by his Special Adviser on Public Communications, Prince Dotun Oyelade, that the reduction in the number of students intake has affected the Internally Generated Revenue of the institution.

According to the statement, the government approved the increase based on the recommendation of the Polytechnic Governing Council on the challenge posed by the NBTE guideline.

With the increase of N50000 for ND I and HND I and N60000 for part-time students, the fees is still comparatively lower than other adjoining polytechnics, the statement remarked.

On the SSCE result in the state, the statement said SSCE unimpressive result is a national challenge which each state is trying to grapple with.

As a way of improving on the standard of education, the statement said, the Alao-Akala administration started a programme called Reviving Academic Excellence In Schools (RAISE) which was kick-started in the middle of this year.

The statement said schools of sciences in the state are being turned into model institutions starting with Pade School of Science, while boarding house system has also been resuscitated.
