Addis Ababa — The Ethiopian Arbitration Conciliation Center conducted a three-day training on mediation skills to 57 individuals engaged in providing community services at various grassroots level in the capital.
The trainees were awarded certificates on Wedneday for their successful completion of the training program aimed at promoting alternative dispute resolution (ADR), the centre said in a press statement.
The training was given to people drawn from Iddirs, women's desk, women's forum, law enforcement officers, employees of the security office, social court judges, registrars, HIV desk, kebele council spokespersons, kebele general services staff, health bureau heads as well as heads of kebele administrations.
The training-the center's 19th so far-was given by Asfaw Seife, a former judge of the High court of Ethiopia and currently Director of Arbitrations and Senior Arbitrator heading Dispute Resolution Services of the Financial Services Commission of Ontario, Canada.
Some 39 women participated in the training, which also provided experience-sharing opportunities through the group discussion and practical exercise sessions.
EACC is registered with the Ministry of Justice as a non-profit juridical entity and provides alternative dispute resolution services.
It is also working with 12 kebeles in Addis Ababa, by organizing those that have taken mediation skills training to provide mediation services in their respective communities.
EACC was established with the aim of ensuring assess to justice through the promotion of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) in Ethiopia. Since its inception it has provided mediation skills trainings to over 115 social court judges, registrars and municipal regulation enforcement officers from Adama, Arba Minich, Awassa, Bahir Dar, Dire Dawa, Huruta and Mekele.
The just concluded training was carried out through the financial support of the Embassy of France.
EACC will also carry out a similar three-day training to participants from the Regions and another three-day training of trainers next week. Ato Asfaw will carry out these trainings as well.
