Conakry — President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf was among sub-regional and other African leaders attending the state funeral of the late Guinean President Lansana Conte on December 26, 2008 in Conakry. An Executive Mansion release says the Liberian President extended sympathy to the bereaved family and the people of Guinea as she, along with other leaders, paid tribute and viewed the remains as a mark of respect to the late Guinean leader. Thousands of Guineans and other sympathizers crammed the People's Palace in Conakry to pay their last respects to their late leader. Leaders of member countries of the Mano River Union were all in attendance.
In a statement early this week, the Liberian leader described the death of President Conte as a great loss not only to the people of Guinea but also to Liberia, given the strong cultural ties as well as the pivotal role played by General Conte in restoring peace and stability to Liberia.
President Johnson Sirleaf, who chairs the Mano River Union, arrived in the Guinean capital on Friday morning. She was accompanied by Deputy Foreign Minister, Mr. William Bull; Defense Minister Brownie Samukai; National Security Advisor to the President, Dr. H. Boimah Fahnbulleh; Director of the National Security Agency (NSA), Fumba Sirleaf; and Deputy Immigration Commissioner, Abla Gadegbeku Williams.
The President and delegation have since returned home. The delegation was met upon arrival by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr. Ambulai Johnson, who acted as chairman of the Cabinet in the absence of the President.
