Owerri — SOME funds may soon be released to tackle Nekede erosion disaster that is already threatening to sack the entire community, following the recent visit of the Senate Committee on Environment and Ecology.

The member representing Owerri West constituency in Imo State House of Assembly, Miss Ukachi Amaechi, stated this while presenting her scorecard during a constituency briefing held at Baptist Primary School field Obinze.

"During the year, I embarked on different modules of lobbying for attention at various levels of government on the Nekede gully erosion disaster, which the Senate Committee Chairman on Environment and Ecology, Senator Grace Bent, came to inspect," Amaechi said.

According to the lawmaker, "The good news is that some funds will soon be released to address the terrible situation of the site, which has been acknowledged as life threatening."

On the empowerment of women and youths in the area, Miss Amaechi said that she has, as part of her programme, put in place micro credit for women and skill acquisition, especially for young people, to enable this class of people participate in economic activities.

"This is necessary for the reduction of the devastating effect and impact of poverty in our society. The high rate of unemployment has assumed an alarming rate in our country with its vicious impact," the lawmaker said.

Speaking also, the traditional ruler of Nekede autonomous community, Eze Jonas K. Agumanu, said that the erosion menace is giving the entire people sleepless nights.
