Lagos — The African Women Lawyers Association (AWLA) yesterday in Lagos charged African youths, particularly in Nigeria, to desist from information technology related crimes, especially cyber crime popularly known as yahoo yahoo.

The co-ordinator of AWLA, Mrs Roseline Akinbo, made this call at the association's third annual lecture tagged "Legal Implication of information Technology: Youths and the Society" held at the Ikeja Local government Council, Lagos. Akinbo said in her opening remarks that the quality of leaders the nation will inherit will be determined by the youth who are the future leaders and this will determine the quality of leaders the nation will have. She said cyber crime was assuming a wider dimension among Nigerian youths and was being celebrated by the society.

She encouraged parents to closely monitor their children's excessive lifestyles, adding that any child found to be living a flashy lifestyle should be checkmated and examined critically. "You will all agree with me that as parents, the demands of the economy will always make us go out to make ends meet. However, considering peer pressure ,no one is an exception, so all hands must be on deck to eradicate cyber crime among our youths," Akinbo advised. She added that the lecture will bring positive ripples effect on the youths, parents and the society at large.
