27 December 2008

Abuja — The House of Representatives has condemned the recent coup d'etat in Guinea and urged the African Union (AU) to intervene in the leadership crisis that occured, following the death of President Lansana Conte. The lower chamber of the National Assembly also tasked the leadership of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to ensure that democracy was restored and the military junta did not succeed in holding on to power.

Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, who spoke on behalf of the House, said coups and military rule have gone out of fashion and advised the coup plotters to quit the scene.

He added that the 'worst democratic government was better than the best military regime'.

Eyiboh said the African Union (AU) and ECOWAS must take decisive steps to restore democracy in Guinea as any attempt to condone the illegal regime would forth send wrong signals to other African countries and the rest of the international community.

He described Captain Moussa Camara-led military junta as unfortunate, but expressed hope that with President Umaru Yar'Adua's position as ECOWAS chairman, the regional body would explore all diplomatic avenues to rescue the people of Guinea from the insurrection.

According to him, the House of Representatives would remain committed to promoting true democracy within the West African sub region and would support any effort that may lead to the entrenchment of good governance.

He said long years of military dictatorship created several problems in Nigeria which could have been avoided if democracy was allowed to flourish in the country since attaining independence in 1960.

He said other countries in the sub-region must not be allowed to through the same experience.
