Uganda: URA One Step Away From Tusker Crown

Norman Katende

27 December 2008

Kampala — HISTORY is there to be re-written and being duly aware of this, URA coach Moses Basena has elected to be brave and take the necessary risks needed to come back with victory.

The URA tactician will deploy three strikers in today's Tusker Cup final. The champion will walk off with sh52m, with the loser taking home sh22m.

No foreign team has ever lifted the top prize of the seven-year-old tournament that was inaugurated in 2001, but this statistic only serves to motivate Basena further.

"It's just history and can be rewritten," said Basena yesterday.

URA beat Mtibwa in the opening game and Basena is confident his players have it to go all the way.

"A cup final is always a cup final and the strategies differ. But we will look at taking the lead early and not give up the chase for more goals. It's good that everything is okay in camp with no injuries."

Tony Mawejje and Eric Obua, scorers of the two goals that dispatched Simba in the semi-finals, will link up with Martin Muwanga to start an early search for goal in this afternoon's encounter against Mtibwa Sugar at the National Stadium in Dar Es Salam.

Mawejje and Obua helped URA come from behind to beat Simba in the semifinals on Wednesday and Basena is confident the same combination can lead the battle against Mtibwa.

For the seven years the Tusker Cup has been played, Simba have lifted the trophy four times with Young Africans and Kagera Sugar lifting it once. Tanzanians will look to Mtibwa to continue their strong showing.
