The tournament organised by Sam Peters fans club is for amateur boxers from Akwa Ibom, Cross River and Imo states.Speaking during the opening ceremony, the state's sports commissioner Hon.Friday Enobong Umoetuk said

"This competition is being organised to keep preparing our boxers to be in shape and fit for the National Sports Festival coming up in February 2009 and also to promote and celebrate our son Samuel Peters whose ranking has been released as number 4 in the world under WBC.This information came to me from his camp. His next fight will be with the second best in the world,

if he succeeds from this one then he will have another fight and shot at the WBC crown. We are doing this in his support to spur him on towards this first fight in the first quarter of 2009 after that loss in Berlin. He personaly spoke to me on December 11 to reaffirm that he is ready to fight now and move ahead to capture the belt for Akwa Ibom and Nigeria"
