Nigeria: Bayelsa, Heartland Share Lead @ Christmas

As the 2008/2009 Premier League season goes on Christmas break this weekend to resume on January 3rd 2009, Bayelsa United and Heartland FC of Owerri share the spotlight at the top of the Globacom Premier League.

Unlike Heartland, Bayelsa United at the beginning of the season did not give any indication that they will be among the front runners before Christmas. But a series of good performance threw them to the top of the table. After 16 matches, the side have nine wins, four draws, three loses and 31 points.

Heartland on the other hand, although did not enjoy a brilliant start, found their feet early enough to share the topspot with Bayelsa United. Cajethan Nkwopara attributed the team's good placment in the league to the determination on the part of the team's management and players to win the league.

"The payment of part of the sign-on fees and allowances of the players and officials contributed to the good run of the club so far. Having met their demands, the players knew that no excuses will be tolerated, so they had no option than to go all out for good results. We are happy that at the Christmas break, we are on top of the league", he said.

Third on the table is Warri Wolves with an outstanding match with Enyimba. The Solomon Ogbeide led side have proven beyond doubt that they are title seekers and after 15 games, they have chulked up 27 points and have scored 20 goals conceding 10 so far.

The promise of Delta State governor Emmanuel Uduaghan to take the team to Europe again is one of the motivating factors in the team. Like Uduaghan, the promises made by the Chairman of the States Sports Commission Amaju Pinnick to the team is another factor that has seen the players give their best on every occasion.
