Nigeria: Why Alaafin Loves Gov Alao-Akala

Yemi Bamidele

28 December 2008

The Alaafin of Oyo and chairman of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III has publicly declared his love and support for the state governor, Otunba Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala saying the love stemmed from the governor's "unequalled and exemplary leadership qualities."

The traditional ruler who paid a felicitation visit to Alao-Akala at his private residence in Ogbomoso on Friday extolled the virtues of the governor and concluded that Alao-Akala had consistently accorded due respect to the rule of law.

He said the governor had upheld the legislation which recommended increase in the membership of the state traditional council to 30.

The Alaafin said Alao-Akala had been giving the traditional institution its due respect, in addition to according priority to the welfare of the chiefs in the state.

But the Alaafin described as untrue insinuations from some quarters that his unalloyed support for Alao-Akala was due to the fact that the royal fathers had benefitted more in the present government than the previous administrations.

Such reports, the Alaafin said, were "biased, unfair and mischievous", as according to him, his (Alaafin's) love and support for Alao-Akala only stemmed from his display of unequalled and exemplary leadership qualities.

In his response, the governor thanked Oba Adeyemi for the visit just as he pledged that his administration would not relent in efforts at ensuring even distribution of "democratic dividends" to all the geo-political zones in the state.

The governor also commended traditional rulers in the state for the support and goodwill being extended to his administration.

He called on the citizens of the state to continue to maintain peaceful co-existence with their fellows and enjoined them to give their support to the present administration for the development and progress of the state.
