South Africa: Bondarenko Back in SA

29 December 2008

Viktor Bondarenko will be making a return to South African soil as coach of Primeiro de Agosto in January as the nine-time Angolan champions continue with their preparations for the CAF Champions League.

Agosto will train at the University of Pretoria from January 19-29, with Bondarenko hoping to play against local sides. Alex Bondarenko, the son of the 59-year-old Russian, is already working on arranging friendly games.

The Angolan team is already in training, having started their sessions early due to the fact that they face CA Renaissance Aiglons of Congo-Brazzaville in the first leg of the preliminary round on January 31. The second leg is set for a fortnight later in Congo.

Having been knocked out in the first round of the Champions League this year, Primeiro de Agosto are looking at improving their fortunes in the new year.

Bondarenko is a former Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates, Moroka Swallows and Bush Bucks coached. He joined Agosto in early December, replacing Portuguese coach Victor Manuel, who was sacked for failing to win the title, despite finishing second to Petro Athletico.
