Nigeria: Kwali Earmarks N10 Million for Scholarships

Abubakar Sadiq Isah

29 December 2008

Ten million Naira has been earmarked by the Kwali Area Council for scholarship disbursement to indigent students learning in various tertiary institutions across the country.

Council's boss, Mr. Danlami Saleh Yebu, who disclosed this to news men recently, said it is part of the council's gesture in assisting less privilege students, in order to reduce the burden of their school fees on their parents.

He said the council created a conducive learning environment, to enable children to contribute meaningfully to the development of the society.

According to him, in order for such a child to get quality education and meet up with challenges ahead, he must have both moral and financial support from every stakeholder in the society.

The council boss lamented that under -aged children are been abused by people that send them to the streets to hawk sachet water, and sell oranges as well as banana.

He said such children at times turnout to become nuisance to the society and attributed their problems to poverty, which he said pervades the entire society.

Mr. Yebu however explained that since he took the mantle of leadership of the council, his administration has strived hard to ensure that education is placed at its rightful place, in line with President Umar Musa Yar,adua's seven points agenda.

He said the council procured school instructional materials that included 5,000 textbooks, 57,000 exercise books, 4,000 chairs for primary school pupils as well as the procurement of a Peugeot 307 Car for the LEA education secretary, in order to facilitate his supervising role in schools across the council.

The council boss further said that the council has made efforts in addressing the issue of teacher's welfare, by ensuring their promotion takes place when due and prompt payment of their salaries, arrears, fringe benefits.

In another development, Yebu last Thursday congratulated Christians in the council area.

The council boss, who spoke during a church service at ECWA Church, Yebu, enjoined Christians to use the Xmas period for self-reawakening and self-renewal in what ever they do in the course of promoting their livelihood.

According to him, the birth of Jesus Christ symbolizes a new beginning and a new dispensation in the affairs of men, adding that people should rededicate themselves to the service of the council.

Mr. Yebu urged Kwali residents to embrace peace in their daily activities, explaining that the council would only make progress if there is peace among community leaders and followers.

He informed religious leaders, district heads, and community elders as well as opinion leaders to always advise people whenever they go astray, in order to enhance peace, progress and rapid development of the council.

Earlier, Reverend Samuel Nadabo, of ECWA Church Yebu, described Xmas as a day set aside for every Christian to express gratitude to God.
