Zimbabwe: Miss Unique Mash Central On Tomorrow

30 December 2008

Harare — ALL is set for the Miss Unique Mashonaland Central slated for New Year's Eve at Shamva Country Club.

A bevy of 24 models, drawn from Shamva, Bindura, Mazowe and Mt Darwin who trained as peer educators while in camp since December 27, will battle it out for the crown to represent the province.

The event is organised by the Miss Unique Mashonaland Trust in partnership with DAPP Child Aid Bindura/Shamva and Hope Centre Bindura.

This year's pageant will be held under the theme "Societal unity and behavioural change is the cornerstone for HIV and Aids prevention. Abstinence breeds life to models".

The National Aids Council of Zimbabwe, the Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council and Humana People To People, among others, trained the models in peer education.

The models, dressed by Humana People To People, went on road shows to raise HIV and Aids awareness.

John Laisani, the event organiser, said the road shows were held at several business centres, including Musiiwa, Chakonda, Wadzanai and Madziwa.

"At each of the centres the models helped to raise HIV and Aids awareness as well as interacting with the crowds. They also gave out prizes that included clothes and free tickets to the grand finale," Laisani said.

The winners of the contest, he said, would walk away with R500 for the queen, R400 for the first princess and R300 for second princess.

"However, there is going to be consolation prizes for each contestant of R50 and hampers," Laisani said.

He said the event was made possible through sponsorship from DAPP Humana People To People, Godfrey Tsoka, Simba Sinyoro and Esiya, who is a local businessman, among others.

The Miss Unique Mashonaland Central pageant originated in Shamva in 2006 and covers the province of Mashonaland Central.
