Johannesburg — There was much for ParkTown Girls' High School to celebrate on Tuesday.
There were ululations and cheer as the Gauteng MEC for Education Angie Motshekga announced that not only did ParkTown Girls' High achieve a 100 percent pass rate, but Grade 12 learner, Nadia Hansa scooped seven distinctions, making her one of the five top achievers in the province.
Speaking to BuaNews, the 18-year-old said: "I knew that I wrote very well, but I was quite shocked when I discovered that I have obtained all these distinctions," she said.
Asked about her future plans in the 2009 academic year, Ms Hansa said she wanted to pursue a career in Zoology at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg next year.
Neo Khanya, 18, from Thuto Lesedi in the East Rand said he had achieved four distinctions because he had "worked like a slave" throughout the year.
Addressing the top achievers, Ms Motshekga said: "The great majority of you are the greatest assets that this country has. I will leave this department knowing that as a nation we have heroes who are committed to making us proud as a nation."
Although she had wanted to achieve an 80 percent rate, the MEC said she was satisfied with the academic pass rate of 76.4 percent.
Apart from thanking the province's teachers for always putting learners first and the future of the country, she encouraged them to keep the spirit and continue with the good work in the next academic year.
