Ibadan — The father of Leke Taiwo, one of the slain corps members in the recent Jos mayhem, Pa Josiah Akande, yesterday admonished President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua to ensure the safety of youth corps member at their places of primary assignment.
He said the brutality and carnage, which resulted in the death of his son and two of his colleagues in Jos must stop, as unity and oneness of the country could never be achieved through such mindless blood letting.
Speaking during a condolence visit by the Director-General, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig-General Yusuf Bomoi, to his residence in Ibadan yesterday, Taiwo said his concern was the safety of Nigerian youths, especially corps members anywhere in the country.
Taiwo said the killing of his son was painful to him and the entire members of his family, adding that, "you are all parents; put yourselves in my shoes with my age."
He told the NYSC boss that nothing could compensate for the loss of his son.
According to him, "The soul of a man cannot be bought with money. I thank NYSC management for coming to pay a condolence visit to my family. We have nothing to do than to take solace in God. My younger brother, Chief Harry Akande, too appreciates your gestures."
Olalekan graduated from the Faculty of Engineering, The Polytechnic, Ibadan.
Bomoi, accompanied by Oyo and Plateau States directors of the scheme, said the death of the corps members shall not be in vain, adding that the slain corps members shall be immortalised by the commission.
He said the NYSC management was already brainstorming on the best way to immortalise the corps members, because they died gallantly as heroes during the cause of serving their fatherland.
He said: "The management of NYSC will decide the best way to immortalise Leke and two of his colleagues that were assassinated. We in NYSC feel the pains of their death more than anyone else. It is a sad thing that they died the way they did.
"The three of them have done their best for the country and they were well brought up. I am urging you their parents to take solace in God that they died as heroes. We will do everything possible to reduce the pains of their death on their families."
Bomoi ordered the immediate redeployment of Mr. Diran Akande, brother of the slain corps member, from Osun State to Oyo State, in order to be close to his grief-stricken parents.
About four weeks ago, violence erupted in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State where hundreds of lives were lost and properties worth billions of naira destroyed.
The violence was said to have erupted over results of polls allegedly won by the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), Mr. Timothy Gyang Buba.
