Aguidance and counsellor in Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Post Primary School Management Board (PPSMB), Mrs Beatrice Ogerenyi, has stressed the need for children counseling saying those who impose career on their children ruin their future.Speaking at a workshop in Abuja, she expressed dissatisfaction at parents for imposing careers on their wards.
"Parents want to determine their children career. A child inability to meet up with the minimum university standard into an institution becomes a torn in their flesh. They impose law or medical profession on the children which has led to their non-performance at the labour market.Beatrice advised parents to observe their children's interest and channel them accordingly using the services of guidance counselors to enable the wards accomplish their God- given talents. She also called on schools across the Federation to employ the services of guidance counselors and allow them to practice fully.
"Schools in the FCT are privileged to have guidance counsellors but that is not applicable to some private and government schools across the states. She regretted that some teachers are mandated to combine teaching and counseling which reduces their performance of their very important task.AShe appealed to state governments to emulate the FCT administrations strategy.
