Liberia: Country, China Sign U.S.$9 Million Agreement

The Government of Liberia and the Government of People's Republic of China have signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at further enhancing the friendly relations and promoting Economic and Technical Cooperation between the two countries.

Under the Agreement, which was signed on Monday, December 29, 2008, China will provide Liberia with gratuitous assistance in the tune of RMB Yuan 50, 000,000 or an equivalent of US$9 Million.

According to a Foreign Ministry release, the amount will be used to cover the express of the projects agreed upon by the two sides. A detailed accounting procedures pertaining to the implementation of the agreement are to be worked out between the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Liberia and the China Development Bank.

The Acting Foreign Minister of Liberia, Ambassador William V. S. Bull, signed on behalf of the Liberian Government while Chinese Ambassador to Liberia, His Excellency Zhou Yuxiao, signed on behalf of his Government.

In brief remarks during the signing ceremony, Acting Minister Bull expressed gratitude and appreciation to the Government and People of China on behalf of President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf and the Government and People of Liberia for the partnership and praised China for the role being played in Liberia's recovery programs, especially within the context of Economic and Technical Cooperation as well as the friendly ties subsisting between both countries.

He said Liberia, under the Administration of President Johnson-Sirleaf will remain grateful to China for its numerous initiatives in post-war Liberia.

Responding, Chinese Ambassador Zhou Yuxiao, extolled the Government of Liberia for the cooperation accorded its Chinese counterpart, and expressed his country's commitment to helping Liberia accomplish its post-war recovery programs. Amb. Yuxiao assured that China will explore new areas of cooperation in fostering the partnership. The Chinese Diploma further noted that despite the effect of the global financial crisis on China, his country will continue to assist Liberia

The ceremony was attending by Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Afro Asian Affairs, George Wisner and Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Public Affairs, Josephus M. Gray.
