Kickoff (Cape Town)
31 December 2008
Bafana Bafana defender Matthew Booth is still awaiting a concrete offer before deciding on his next career move.
"I'll leave South Africa soon, but for now I'm recharging my batteries while I wait and enjoying the sun," he says.
Booth's contract with Russian club Krylia Sovetov finishes today (December 31), after which he is a free agent.
"I'm confident that the people I've mandated to find me offers in Europe will come through with good news. The Russian teams begin training in the first week of January, so if it's a move within Russia I'll be going pretty soon," Booth explains.
During his time at home in Cape Town, the former Cape Town Spurs and Mamelodi Sundowns man took in a PSL match between Ajax Cape Town and Sundowns.
"I was a bit disappointed with Sundowns, but it's nice to see Ajax's support increasing. It's good for Cape soccer and it's about time there was a decent stadium - Athlone looked good," he reflects.
"Ajax outplayed Sundowns and it really shows that youth development is rewarding if you are patient. There was a vast difference between the clubs - one that focuses on youth structures and the other which can purchase any player - so it was interesting to see."
Booth went on to wish his fans and KICK OFF readers a safe and joyful New Year's celebration.
