Benin — Executive Director, Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth (ERA), Mr Nnimmo Bassey, has called on President Umaru Yar'Adua to adhere to the December 31, 2008 deadline his administration set to stop gas flaring in Nigeria.
He recalled that in 2005, a Federal High Court gave a ruling which declared gas flaring illegal, and urged Yar'Adua to enforce the court's ruling in line with his administration's commitment to the rule of law.
Bassey made the call yesterday in Benin, at a forum organised by Non-Governmental Organisations to condemn Israeli's attack and occupation of Palestine city of Gaza, adding that in the face of dwindling revenues resulting from fall in the international price of crude oil, Nigeria could not continue to lose $2.5 billion annually due to gas flaring.
He also condemned the world's silence over Isreali's attack on Palestine, noting that the attacks had barricaded Palestines who are now living without food, water and medical supplies.
Earlier in his address, former National President of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr Festus Iyayi, condemned Israel's aggression in the Middle-East, particularly in Gaza, pointing out that terrorism in the world today was as a result of America 's support of Israel's aggression in the Middle East.
"We condemn what Isreal, with the support of America is doing to the people of the Middle East and Gaza," Iyayi said, adding that "only if Israel ends injustice in the region that there would be peace in the area and in the world."
