Nigeria: Abuse of Naira Notes Stillpersists in South East

OFFICIALS of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) may have to review the on-going nationwide campaign against the abuse of the naira because the message appears not to have sunk into the ears of most people, as the usual spraying of the naira occurred unhindered during ceremonies that took place this Yuletide season, especially in the South East.

At most of the traditional and church wedding ceremonies in most communities in this part of the country, guests tried to out do each other in the spraying of the naira to the delight of those around and, as usual, various denominations of the country's currency were stepped on without any inhibition.

Vanguard was at many of such ceremonies and when the organizers and their friends were asked if they were aware of the warning by the CBN that the naira should not be sprayed, they feigned ignorance of the campaign.

In fact, some of the people who wedded this period wondered why the campaign should start at their own time, adding that it would be impossible for the campaign to succeed.

Though a master of ceremonies (MC) at one of the occasions urged those who wanted to spray naira on a newly-wedded couple in Awka at the weekend to respect the naira by dropping it in a container provided for the purpose, the people refused to do that as they tore bundles and threw them into the air. Before long, the crisp notes which were specifically withdrawn from the banks for the purpose, became dirty as the people stepped on them without caring.
