Asmara — 2008 has witnessed enormous tribulations and upheavals at the regional and international levels. Furthermore, these adverse implications will not be confined to the year just ending alone but will entail serious ramifications for 2009 and beyond.
The economic, political, security as well as natural catastrophes that unfolded in 2008 did not emanate from negative developments in the past eight years alone, but indeed represent the outcome of a situation that has been accumulating and fermenting over a period of decades. Proper prediction and identification of future trends and developments will as such require profound analysis and assessment.
Irrespective of how matters will play out in the future, it is imperative for us not only to stand ready - both physically and mentally - for any eventuality, but also to demonstrate, as ever, a spirit of dedication and hard work by properly gauging all possible scenarios in order to overcome all challenges and emerge victorious.
Wishing that 2009 will herald a year of prosperity and hope to the entire Eritrean people, friends and all peace and justice-loving parties, I call for united endeavors to advance these ends.
