Asmara — The Minister of Transport and Communications, Mr. Woldemichael Abraha, said that top priority is being given to the task of expanding infrastructure so as to render improved and efficient land, sea and air transport service, as well as the internet and telephone.
He indicated that up-to-date communication equipments have been introduced at the Asmara International Airport, thus upgrading internal and external communication capacity. Similar equipments are also in the process of being installed at the Assab Airport in a bid to ensure reliable communication at the national level, the Minister added.
Stating that communication equipments in Massawa have substantially improved, Mr. Woldemichael pointed out that modern communication facilities would be introduced in the country's ports in the year 2009.
As regards reinforcing the activities of the Free Economic Zone, he explained that vital infrastructure facilities such as jetties, cranes and the like have been put in place. Moreover, Mr. Woldemichael stated that Eritrean Airlines is making due contribution in providing satisfactory service to passengers and transporting cargo both regionally and beyond.
He further outlined that progress has been registered in 2008 as regards promoting land transport thanks to the construction, repair and asphalting of roads. In this connection, the Minister made mention of the major contribution that Harat Transport Company is making in easing transport problems encountered in all the administrative regions.
Noting that the Government has been striving to introduce modern communication equipments so as to back up the development drive, he indicated that the provision of mobile telephone service continues to expand in all parts of the country. He further stated that continued efforts would be made to raise internet service double-fold. Efforts would also be stepped up to strengthen the work of the Fiber Optics project. In addition, Mr. Woldemichael cited the continued work accomplishments witnessed in postal service.
