Angola: Guitar Player Mingo Dies

31 December 2008

Luanda — The guitarist Domingos Alexandre Lopes "Mingo" of the Movimento band passed away on Monday at Luanda's Military Hospital, victim of an illness, ANGOP has learnt.

A press note from the Union of Artists and composers (UNAC), delivered to ANGOP on Wednesday, says that Mingo was a very good guitar player and became notable in the 1980s in the bands Jovens do Prenda and Movimento.

"Kanhoto, as was also known, was a faithful depository of the rhythms of Jovens do Prenda a band that still resist the test of time and still make wonders. His (Mingo's) premature death causess a void in the artistic class and shakes the efforts of Banda Movimento in the preservation of Angolan music", reads the document.

Alexandre Domingos Lopes "Mingo" was born on October 10, 1960, in Kwanza-Sul Province.
