Nigeria: FG Raises Committee on Erosion Control

Vice President Good luck Jonathan has inaugurated a committee to tackle erosion problems in the country, a director in the Federal Ministry of Environment has said.

Engr. Bawuro Yahaya, who is the Director of Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management told Daily Trust in Abuja yesterday that due to the level of environmental degradation caused by erosion, the VP has met with all the south eastern state governors to fashion a way out.

He said, "Because of the Federal Government's concern on erosion, the VP has met with the five eastern state governors where a committee was set up to look at the problem holistically. The states are Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo"

Engr. Yahaya, who serves as the chairman of the committee said they have toured all the affected states where they ascertained the level of degradation caused by erosion, saying " we were given two weeks to conduct our investigation into the problem and presently a report is being written which will be submitted to the Vice President"

He added, "the report examined all the erosion problems; the cost was estimated. In fact a hydrological and base line study of the zone is to be taken by a reputable consultant. Base on the studies an action plan is going to be arrive at for the tackling of erosion in the five south eastern states in particular and the country at large."
