Mozambique: Localized Floods Threaten Six Towns in Southern Mozambique

1 January 2009

Maputo — The surrounding areas of the towns of Chókwè, Xai-Xai, Chibuto, in the province of Gaza, and Inharrime, Inhambane and Maxixe, province of Inhambane, all in the southern region of Mozambique, could face localized flooding due to the persisting rains and increased water levels in the river basins, reports the Thursday's issue of the daily "Noticias".

According to the National Water Board (DNA), the water basins of Save, Búzi, Limpopo, Incomati, Inhanombe, Mutamba and Inharrime rivers could see this Thursday and Friday a significant rise in water levels.

Therefore, DNA urges the local residents to take all precautionary measures, such as to avoid crossing the river beds, and withdraw all equipment and goods from the river banks.

Meanwhile, Zambezi basin was the only one still above alert levels in the hydrometric stations of Caia and Marromeu on Thursday, but showing clear signs of stabilization.

The water levels were also at critical levels in the Púngoè River, more precisely in Mafambisse district, central province of Sofala.

In the Púngoè basin, the rise of water levels is already cause of concern, with the river busting its banks an inundating over 500 meters, on both sides, in the low lying areas.

Antonio Melembe, Head of Technical Department of Central Region Water Administration (ARA-Centro), said that every sign indicated that the water levels would continue to rise.

"Right now our biggest concern is, without any doubt, the river Púnguè because is still rising even after having reached alert level" - said Melembe, urging the local communities and other business operators to take extra precautionary measures due to the impending risk of flooding along the river basin.
