Nigeria: Flags-Off Mass Cattle Vaccination

2 January 2009

Lagos — Katsina State Governor, Ibrahim Shema, has flagged-off this year's mass cattle vaccination exercise, with assurance that he would put more efforts into livestock development and welfare of nomads in the state.

Shema, who flagged-off the exercise in Dutsi Council area of the state, said it would be carried out free of charge, and warned against fee collection, adding that anyone caught would face the wrath of the law.

He said over 724, 000 cattle and 224, 000 sheeps and goats were vaccinated in the last exercise where over N14 million was spent, and N23 million was earmarked for the procurement of vaccines as the number of animals to be vaccinated had increased.

He said the decision to establish an agriculture implementation committee stemmed from the fact that the state needed to solve problems affecting farming and livestock production.

Earlier, Commissioner for Agriculture, Alhaji Abdulaziz Mohammed, said the mass vaccination exercise was being conducted to avert animal diseases which can affect human beings through meat consumption, adding that it would be carried out house to house, to ensure efficient coverage.
